The Andrew Bayne Memorial Library in Bellevue, Pennsylvania. Editor’s collection.
There are also reports of the two computers behind the front desk behaving oddly while work was being done on the tree. Helfrich said, “I was working at one…alone behind the desk, I heard what sounded like a scanning noise. As I looked at the second computer’s monitor, numbers appeared there. Then just as mysteriously as it started, it stopped. This happened often during this period…My opinion is that Amanda was unhappy about the tree and her spirit was restless.” Odd occurrences have continued to plague the library even after the Lone Sentinel was removed. Reports of strange, unexplained noises continue, and lights and fans will occasionally turn on without explanation.
Helfrich recalled one such occasion for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 2003. She told the paper that a few years before, the library was hosting a movie night on the library’s lawn. The equipment that they used to show the movie was new and had been in working order previously. However, it simply stopped working. Helfrich looked up and noticed the attic light was on (although she was sure it had been off and no one was in the library). On her way up the steps to investigate, she promised Amanda she would not be angry with her for turning the lights on if she would let the DVD player work. When Helfrich returned to the lawn, everything worked perfectly, and the building’s lights stayed off the rest of the night.
Lights turning themselves on is not the only strange electrical occurrence in the library. According to teacher Debbie Scigliano, one year around Halloween, a group of first-graders had gathered in the library for a children’s program. They sat in an upstairs room and listened to spooky stories before being allowed to choose books to take out of the library. During the story-time portion of the event, the overhead fan turned on, chilling the room. Scigilano did not want to alarm the children, so she allowed it to stay on throughout the story time, making sure to turn it off when she left the room. When they returned to gather their coats, the fan turned on again. This is apparently not unusual, and some library employees believe that this was Amanda showing her approval for children’s programs.
